Questions

Will my foreign card work at Japanese ATMs?

A Japanese town street at dusk with red paper lanterns and a passing train, and a glowing line chart drawn across the sky.

Not every ATM in Japan accepts every foreign card, but many machines do. Convenience stores, post offices and some bank branches often have ATMs that accept foreign cards, and they display logos for supported networks. Compare those logos with the ones on your card and check your issuer's terms, including any limits and fees. If a card is declined, avoid trying repeatedly, which can trigger a block; try a different machine and consider contacting your issuer. A debit card is usually cheaper for cash than a credit card.¹
