Questions

What should I do with leftover yen?

A Japanese town street at dusk with red paper lanterns and a passing train, and a glowing line chart drawn across the sky.

You can keep leftover yen for a future trip, spend it before leaving, or exchange it back. Converting back usually costs another spread, so you pay the exchange cost twice, and some providers do not accept coins at all. Many travelers try to spend coins at the airport or on the last day's transport. Plan to spend down IC card and travel card balances toward the end, because refund policies vary and any refund may involve a fee. If you expect to return, keeping the notes can be the simplest option.¹
