Questions
Does Japan use cash or cards more?
Both are used, and acceptance varies by business type, region and card network. Large hotels, department stores and chain restaurants are more likely to take cards, while small family-run places, market stalls, some temples and shrines, local buses and vending machines may prefer or require cash. Carry a primary card, a backup card from a different network and a modest amount of yen, so you are prepared either way. Look for acceptance logos near the register before you order.¹
